2022-23 College Basketball Power Rankings

A wild and unpredictable college basketball season has appropriately bid a farewell. As a 1-seeded Kansas finally stood on top of the mountain, the path to getting to a somewhat expected location was anything but linear.

And now, appropriately, we ask a familiar question.

Who’s next?

Ranking college basketball teams so early for next season is filled with disclaimers. Recruiting classes continue to group together. Departures are being finalized. The transfer portal is just getting started. (This is a simplified way of saying that much of what you read below is likely.)

That won’t stop us from doing it, though.

CBB Power Ranking: Pre-season 2022-2023

25.Iowa

  • National Champion Odds: +6600

The Hawkeyes’ best player, Keegan Murray, is almost certainly related to the NBA. It is a problem. His twin brother, Kris Murray, could be on the verge of a terrific season, and Iowa is not without talent and depth. You could argue for a handful of Big Ten teams here, but Iowa gets the nod for now.

24.Indiana

  • National Champion Odds: +6600

Keep an eye on Trayce Jackson Davis. His decision to stay or go is vital to Indiana’s future. Either way, the Hoosiers have a strong recruiting class and a mix of experience to match.

23.Texas

  • National Champion Odds: +3500

The youth movement is coming. Texas will welcome 5-star recruits Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris next season, which is great news for the head coach Chris Beard. There is work to be done here, but there is a foundation to work with.

22. Oregon

  • National Champion Odds: +3500

About talent infusions, step into Oregon. The Ducks are coming off a disappointing year, but that’s about to change. Kel’el Ware and Dior Johnsonboth 5-star rookies, are immediate upgrades to a roster that already has some depth.

21.Auburn

  • National Champion Odds: +4000

Jabari Smith and Walker Kesler are gone, and these holes will not be easy to fill. Still, Auburn is firing some key contributors, and the Tigers have flashed at times last year.

20. T&Cs

  • National Champion Odds: +10,000

This team can fight. We saw it in this year’s tournament when the Horned Frogs nearly knocked down Arizona. Mike Miles went to the NBA, but the roster is young and promising. This program is really on the rise.

19. Jourton

  • National Champion Odds: +10,000

Barring unforeseen events, Dayton will fire all five starters next season. This is great news for a team that won 24 games last season. One of those wins came against eventual national champion Kansas in the ESPN Events Invitational. Stay tuned.

18.Purdue

  • National Champion Odds: +4000

Let’s start with the losses. Jaden Ivey and Trevion Williams are probably gone, and they won’t be easy to replace. But mammoth center Zach Edey should be back, and it’s a huge piece, literally.

17. Illinois

  • National Champion Odds: +5000

Will be Kofi Cockburn to come back? The answer will significantly influence Illinois’ chances, especially given its quality at the college level. If he returns, the head coach Brad Underwood will have another chance at a huge year.

16. Texas Technology

  • National Champion Odds: +2,500

New head coach Mark Adams has risen to the occasion this year, which should give a lot of hope for the future. Although TTU has no real star, many capable players return to a motivated group.

15.Alabama

  • National Champion Odds: +2,500

This team seemed capable of making a run not too long ago, even if the pieces never quite meshed. However, with the arrival of a top-five recruiting class, an injection of talent will likely provide the spark this team needs.

14. Creighton

  • National Champion Odds: +5000

The team that scared the eventual national champion will largely return. Creighton will be bringing back many key contributors, which is a scary thought. While he may not have the same “name” power as the others on this list, Creighton could be a problem.

13. Tennessee

  • National Champion Odds: +3000

The Vols were a team that many, myself included, loved to make a deep run in the tournament. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and the loss of a freshman Kennedy Chandler won’t help. But many more will return, and Tennessee is poised to make an effort once again.

12.Michigan

  • National Champion Odds: +2,500

It was a weird year, to put it mildly. Hunter Dickinsonthe decision to stay or leave is important for the head coach Juwan Howard. But Michigan has many great men coming back and promising young players coming in.

11. Villanova

  • National Champion Odds: +1800

The title race was short, but Villanova showed many that they could compete. Collin Gillespie finally left, even if the roster is still ripe with experience.

10. Baylor

  • National Champion Odds: +1800

Memory? Not so long ago, Baylor won the national championship. This year, the Bears have fallen considerably short despite being a 1 seed. That experience and the arrival of George Keyontea contender to be the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, should see Baylor return to form.

9.Arizona

  • National Champion Odds: +1600

It seems likely that Benoit Mathurin leaves for the NBA. If so, and he may not be the only one, Arizona’s roster will need to be replenished. This decision is worth watching, but the Wildcats will compete regardless.

8. Gonzaga

  • National Champion Odds: +1200

Drew Timme will test the waters of the NBA, although he could still come back. Chet Holmgren, however, has almost certainly disappeared. Gonzaga has always known former top-notch recruits on the roster, but dropping out is possible.

7.Kansas

  • National Champion Odds: +1200

National champions will be formidable once again. Yes of course. While a No. 7 ranking may seem unfair to champions, Ochai Agbaji (and others) are likely to move on. However, a monster recruitment class should help.

6.Houston

  • National Champion Odds: +1800

The Cougars almost made it to another Final Four, and they did it without Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark. Both players were lost to injury last season, and both are expected to be back next year. That, coupled with other returning productions, could spell another memorable run.

5. North Carolina

  • National Champion Odds: +1400

This one is very TBD. Armand Bacot and Caleb Love could return or head to the NBA. Still, this team has momentum after a second-place finish in the tournament. They have to show it in the regular season now.

4. Duke

  • National Champion Odds: +1000

Losing most of a starting lineup that just reached the Final Four is usually a problem. However, the new head coach Jon Scheyer will welcome four 5-star recruits as part of college basketball’s No. 1 recruiting class. This team will be very young but could be a lot of fun.

3.Kentucky

  • National Champion Odds: +1000

The disappointment of a first-round loss lingers, but Kentucky reloads and waits. The status of Oscar Tshiebwe is to follow, but new blood is coming. Cason Wallace and Chris Livingstoneboth ranked top 10 players in the class, could be instant stars.

2.Arkansas

  • National Champion Odds: +1200

The pigs are coming. Eric Mousselman is about to offer one of the best recruiting classes in the country, led by guards Nick Smith. With five of the nation’s top 90 players heading to Arkansas, an already strong roster will be infused with more talent.

1.UCLA

  • National Champion Odds: +1400

Yes Mick Cronin receives good news on the return of talent, UCLA could make its case as the first national team overall. The decisions of Johnny Juzang, Jaime Jaquez Jr.., and peyton watson will tilt this ranking in one direction or the other.
