Apple shares Star Wars Day movie ‘Behind the Mac’

On the occasion of Star Wars Day, Apple shared today a “Behind the Mac” movie featuring Skywalker Sound, Lucasfilm’s sound effects division known for films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Skywalker Sound uses 130 Mac Pro shelves, 50 iMac50 MacBook Pro and 50 mac mini computers running Pro Tools, all of which connect remotely to a central machine room. The studio also uses a fleet of iPad, iPhoneand AppleTV aids to its production process. Ranch staff even pointed to the role of older equipment such as the Apple PowerBook.

Ben Burtt, the sound designer for the original Star Wars trilogy, the prequel trilogy and the Indiana Jones franchise, said his journey started with a Macintosh SE and urged young people who want to work with sound in movies to start creating a sound. collection of effects using “inexpensive apps you can access now on your ‌iPad‌ or MacBook, that you can actually do all kinds of sound cutting and mixing at home”.

Editor and sound designer Al Nelson said the ‌iPhone‌ recordings are “perfectly usable” in a professional context. Seven-time Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom explained:

You can tell a lot of the story with sound in a way that is less expensive than visuals, usually, and sometimes more emotionally powerful. If you are interested in sound or movie making, you can record 4K+ videos on your iPhone. There are no excuses. The things that are part of our daily lives are the same things you need to record sound and make movies. This is the real revolution. Ultimately, this will democratize the whole process.

On Monday, May 9, 2022, Apple will host a unique Today at Apple online session with Skywalker Sound’s Leff Lefferts and Apple Musicby Eddie Francis, with footage from Skywalker Ranch and the chance to learn from an Apple Creative Pro how to create voice effects for a character using their voice, everyday objects and GarageBand.
