Heroes of Liberty will publish a children’s book about the late talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh next month, the latest in a series of biographies for young people that teach traditional conservative values through the stories of American heroes. Limbaugh’s slice is designed to teach kids the importance of free speech and that it’s okay to speak your mind, even if some people won’t agree.

“We launched Heroes of Liberty about a year ago, and that’s because we saw a hole in the market. We saw that it was a need that wasn’t being met,” Bethany Mandel said. , editor of Heroes of Liberty, to Fox News Digital.

SEAN HANNITY MARKS A YEAR SINCE RUSH LIMBAUGH’S DEATH: ‘HE HAD A GIFT NOBODY ELSE HAD’

Mandel and the other people behind Heroes of Liberty were tired of seeing multiple children’s books about liberals like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton when conservative legends like President Ronald Reagan were ignored by the genre.

“So we wanted to fill that need,” she said. “Ideologically half the country is on one side and half the country is on the other and the need is not being met by the right.”

Heroes of Liberty has previously published books for children aged 7 to 12 about Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Sowell, Judge Amy Coney Barrett and John Wayne. Mandel said the response has been “incredible” because there is a clear need for books aimed at children of conservative parents.

“There’s been a lot of attention on children’s literature in the last six months. People are starting to realize the state of children’s literature, and they’re starting to realize the ideological capture that’s happening in libraries and the absolutely inert, age-inappropriate content that’s stored in a lot of libraries. And people realize, you know, it’s up to us. We can’t let the genre of society as a whole define the morals of our children and our family because they don’t share our morals,” Mandel said.

Some of the books exemplify manhood, like Wayne’s biography which focuses on a boy who grew up in the “Wild West” to become Hollywood’s biggest star, because Heroes of Liberty doesn’t think the young boys are learning this type of messaging these days. Other titles, like Coney Barrett’s biography, focus on traditional family values.

The next book will focus on Limbaugh and the First Amendment, and Mandel realizes the polarizing conservative will likely create controversy, but Heroes of Liberty thinks it’s worth it.

“It’s obviously about freedom of speech. It’s about the First Amendment. But for me, as an editor, the most important thing for me to go into this book, especially in the last two years , is that kids are afraid to speak their minds,” Mandel said, noting that American children have suffered from COVID-related school closures that they could not reasonably object to.

“None of that makes sense, and we teach kids that they have to swallow that instinct in them that says, speak up, speak your mind, kind of object to things when you find them objectionable,” said Mandel continued. “When you talk to a child therapist and child psychiatrists, a lot of the mental health problems children have are because they swallow anything that could possibly offend someone, whether it’s offensive or not. . And so we really wanted the message of this book, it’s good to say what you think, it’s good to be honest and say what you believe.”

She said kids need to learn that sometimes people won’t agree with their opinion, and the conservative talk radio legend is the perfect role model for what Heroes of Liberty hopes to accomplish.

“In the case of Rush Limbaugh, sometimes it’s not spelled out perfectly, but none of us are perfect and none of the heroes we choose are perfect,” Mandel said. “But the important thing is that with this book, children need to hear that they can speak their mind and that their voice has power.”

She said the Limbaugh book, which will be released in May, teaches children that even people who disagree with successful Americans will have to listen to them.

“President Obama had to deal with this [Limbaugh] was saying because he was very influential in our national discourse. Whether people liked him or not, there were millions who liked him and millions who disliked him. But his voice mattered,” Mandel said. “One of the goals of children’s literature is the window and the mirrors. Thus, children must be able to see through a window their potential future, and they must see themselves in the mirror. And that’s why usually about half of our books are actually based on the childhood of the person we’re writing about… we have a lot of really amazing stories, sort of, about Rush’s life and childhood Limbaugh and how he became who he was.”

The books feature elaborate illustrations that help educate young people about the lasting impact the heroes featured in each edition have on Americans.

“We used many different illustrators from around the world to illustrate all of these books, and we wanted to get a good sense of the person based on the illustrations,” Mandel said. “So the illustrations that we did for the Amy Coney Barrett book are really kind of a soft, gentle watercolor because that’s kind of the mood that we were shooting for with Amy Coney Barrett. The Alexander Hamilton, the illustrations on this are amazing. They’re in a museum. And, you know, every page is completely, fully illustrated. They’re really beautiful.

Heroes of Liberty believes particular snapshots of the lives of public figures are key to telling that person’s story, like Coney Barrett who held up the blank card during his confirmation hearing. As for Limbaugh, there were two iconic images that Mandel wanted to make sure were captured by illustrators.

“There’s the golden microphone where I mean, that’s where the magic happened in his studio with the golden microphone. It’s Rush Limbaugh,” she said of the illustration which will appear on the cover of the book.

“One of the other most powerful images for me, which you know came much later in his life, was when he received the Presidential Medal of Honor,” she said. “You can kind of see Melania Trump putting that around her neck, and it was a really, really powerful moment…so we have both of those moments illustrated in this book.”

Limbaugh was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in January 2020 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Trump during the State of the Union address a few days later. He died on February 17, 2021, leaving behind a huge void of his big, booming voice that articulated conservatism like no one else in American history.
