ESPN drops the puck in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs presented by GEICO with 12 first-round games over three days

The puck falls on the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs on ESPN Presented by GEICO with 12 first-round games on ESPN and ESPN2 over three days beginning Monday, May 2. Every first-round game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs will be available on ESPN or ESPN2. Each of those nights, games will start at 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET, providing fans with nonstop quad-header action. Besides, Point will air daily as an intro to the playoffs and Stanley Cup Finals.

In the Eastern Conference, the Atlantic Division won Florida Panthers face the joker Washington Capitals and Alex Ovechkin. In the regular season, the Capitals went 1-1-1 against the Panthers, however, the Capitals enter the playoffs on a four-game losing streak. Although the Panthers haven’t won a playoff since 1996, they enter this playoff top of the standings, having won the President’s Trophy this season as the NHL’s top team.

With a victory in their last game of the regular season, second place in the Atlantic Division Toronto Maple Leafs and scorer of 60 goals Auston Matthews officially face the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Maple Leafs haven’t won a playoff since 2004, but enter the playoffs on a three-game winning streak. Regular season matchups between the Leafs and Lightning have been split, but the Lightning are on an impressive 7-1-0 streak to end the season.

Metropolitan Division Champion Carolina Hurricanes take on the best joker in the Eastern Conference Boston Bruins. The teams will face off for the third time in four playoff series — where the Bruins have won two of three in the series. In the regular season, the Hurricanes swept the Bruins, allowing them just one goal in all three games. The Hurricanes head into the first round on a six-game winning streak.

After a long battle for second place in the Metropolitan Division, second place New York Rangers will face third place Pittsburgh Penguins. The two teams last met in the playoffs in 2016 as the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. The Penguins have the advantage in playoff matchups against the Rangers, going 5-2 overall. In the regular season, the Rangers beat the Penguins except in their first game and edged them 11-4.

On the Western Conference side, Central Division and Conference Champion Colorado avalanche take the joker Nashville Predators. This is the second time the teams have played in the first round of the playoffs. Their most recent matchup was in 2018 where the Predators won in six. In the regular season, the Predators won the series 3-1 against the Avs.

Second and third place Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues squared. In the regular season, St. Louis beat Minnesota in four of five games, including two in overtime. Since the arrival of St. Louis head coach Craig Berube, the Blues are 13-1-2 against the Wild. In what looks to be an exciting streak, the Blues and Wild both finished the regular season on a high. It will be their third playoff matchup — Minnesota took the win in 2015, while St. Louis took the win in 2017.

The Pacific Division Champion Calgary Flames meet the joker Dallas Stars. The two teams have met in the first round in two of the last three seasons. The Stars and Flames faced off most recently in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where the Stars won in six. In the regular season, Calgary had two wins and an overtime loss against Dallas.

the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings will be the game for second and third place in the Pacific Division. The star-studded Oilers beat Los Angeles except in their regular season opener. Los Angeles returns to the playoffs for the first time since the 2017-18 season. It will be the eighth time the Oilers and Kings have met in the playoffs, with the Oilers winning five of the previous seven matchups — the last meeting in 1992.
