How UConn Men’s Basketball Team Uses Analytics Company For Player Recruiting And Analytics: ‘It’s A Tool’

When Tristan Newton announced he was leaving East Carolina and entering the NCAA transfer portal just over a month ago, UConn men’s basketball coaching staff l immediately rocketed to the top of their wish list.

A 6-foot-5 playmaker who dropped 25 points to the Huskies in first year, Newton seemed like exactly what UConn was looking for. Head coach Dan Hurley and assistants Kimani Young and Luke Murray called on former ECU coach Joe Dooley and others to do their due diligence on Newton.

They also sought information from HD Intelligence.

From whom, you ask? HD Intelligence (HDI) is an analytics company founded in 2019 by Harvard graduates Matt Dover and Colton Houston. Drawing inspiration from the analysis departments of the NBA, HDI seeks to assist college programs in two primary ways: player performance analysis and opponent planning.
