Increase in mental health problems

Maryland Peace of Mind: Rise in Mental Health Issues Due to Pandemic

IT’S THE MOUNT ANDH OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS IN THIS MORNING’S MARYLAND MIND PIECE. WE ARE JOINED BY CARRIE GRAVES WHO IS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ETH METRO BALTIMORE ARM OF NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH AIANCONE, CARRIE. THANK YOU FOR JOIN US THIS MORNING. I REALLY APPRECIATE. ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WELCOMING ME. YOU ARE WELCOME. SO EVERYONE KNOWS DURING THE PANDEMIC, MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS HAVE EXPLODED IN THIS COUNTRY AND TRYING TO FIND HELP HAS BECOME VERY VERY DIFFICULT. WHAT IS THE SITUATION NOW? IS THE NUMBER OF THEPIRASTS ABOUT THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS? NOW, UNFORTUNATELY, WE ARE NOT REALLY TRACKING THE NUMBER. THE DEMAND IS INCREDIBLY HIGH AS YOU JUST MENTIONED AND THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED SUPPLIERS. THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR THIS. YOU KNOW THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH NEW PEOPLE COMING TO THE FIELD AND THERE IS THE COMPENSATION OF OUR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. THIS IS NOT WHERE IT SHOULD BE. THERE ARE LOW REIMBURSEMENT RATES AND IN ADDITION, YOU KNOW, WE REALLY NEED TO DIVERSIFY SUPPLIERS WHO ARE ALSO OUT TREHE AND HAVE SUPPLIERS WITH CULTURAL SKILLS. THEY JUST SERVE OUR RELATIONSHIP TOO AND WE DO NOT REALLY MEET DEMAND IN ANY OF THESE AREAS. I THINK WE ARE SEEING THE INCREASE IN NUMBERS FROM COVID-19, WHICH WILL CONTINUE I EXPECT TO INCREASE IN THE COMING YEARS AND I THINK THIS SHORTAGE IS EXPECTED TO ALMOST DOUBLE BY 2025 AT THE RATE WE’RE GOING TO NOW. SO THIS IS SOMETHING WE AS A SOCIETY REALLY NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF AND YOU KNOW TO DO OUR BEST TO SUPPORT OUR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND GET INTO THIS FIELD. WELL TTHA SOUNDS GOOD FOR EVERYONE MORE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES MORE PEOPLE NEEDING HELP AND FEWER AND FEWER PEOPLE TO GIVE THEM THE HELP THEY NEED. YES. ABSOLUTELY. THIS IS DEFINITELY A GROWING PROBLEM. YOU KNOW, I THINK WE ALL ARE SEEING THIS INCREASED AND NUMBER OF MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS COMING OUT OF THIS PANDEMIC FROM INDIVIDUALS WHO MAY HAVE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS BEFORE THE PANDEMIC BUT REALLY HAVE, YOU DON’T KNOW THESE PROBLEMS COME TO FOR THROUGHOUT THIS PERIOD, THEN INDIVIDUALS WHO FOUND THE PANDEMIC IN REAL KIND OF PROTECTION IN A WAY YOU KNOW HAVE 13 AT HOME AND NOW COME BACK FROM THE PANDEMIC. WE ARE SEEING A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE ANXIETY OR YOU KNOW THIS RETURNING TO NORMAL. AND WHAT IS THIS NEW NORMAL AS A WLEL AND REALLY KIND OF COLLATERAL DAMAGE TOO, RIGHT? SO YOU HAVE THE INITIAL ANXIETY OF THE PANDEMIC AND NOW, AS YOU JUST MENTIONED, PEOPLE ARE GETTING BACK. THERE ARE MORE AND MORE PROBLEMS THAT APPEAR. IT’S TRUE. AND THINK YOU KNOW, UNFORTUNATELY WE WILL SAY THIS HAPPENS FOR A VERY LONG TIME. IT IS NOT SOMETHING EVEN IF THIS PANDEMIC MAGICALLY END TOMORROW, WHICH WE STILL WISH IT WAS. VERY GOOD. WE WILL TOEE S THESE PROBLEMS FOR YEARS AND YEARS TO COME AND AND THE THEAN M ON OUR MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM IS JUST INCREDIBLY HIGH AND AND WE AS A SOCIETY ARE NOT PLACED FOR THIS WE HAVE NOT DONE THE WORK ON OUR SYSTEM TO ENSURE THAT THE INFRASTRUCTURE IS THERE FOR THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ARRIVE WELL, AND NOT JUST IN TRAINED THERAPISTS ABLE TO HELP PEOPLE, BUT ALSO IN PATIENT BEDS FOR ANYONE WHO MAY NEED OF SOME KIND OF A LONGER CARE TREATMENT PLAN TYPE. YES EXACTLY. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH BEDS FOR HOTELS, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT OUR YOUNG PEOPLE, IT IS CREDIBLY DIFFICULT FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO GET A BED FOR IMPATIENT RIGHT NOW. WE HAVE A SEVERE SHORTAGE OVERALL BUT IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA AND THIS IS UNIQUE TO MARYLAND I SHOULD SAY I MEAN IT IS THE RIGHT COUNTRY THAT THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF THIS TOO. AND SO THIS IS SURELY SOMETHING WE HAVE TO ANSWER WHEN WE SEE BEFORE THE PANDEMIC ONE IN FIVE PEOPLE HAD A MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM AND NOW WE ARE SEEING ONE IN FOUR AND HOW WE TALK ABOUT OUR YOUNG ADULTS AS ‘YEARS OF COLLEGE AGE, WE TALK NE O IN THREE AND SO THE NUMBERS ARE SPECTACULAR AND REGARDING CERTAINLY WE HAVE TO ANSWER THEM AND CHANGE SOME THINGS WITH THE OINUR SYSTEM WELL AND YOU KNOW, AND THAT IS PERFECT SENSE BECAUSE THE MORE YOU START TO TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT IT. I DON’T KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS NOT BEEN IMPACTED WHO IS NOT DEALING WITH SOME KIND OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM. AND SO PERHAPS A GOOD THING THAT COMES OUT IS THAT WE ARE TALKING MORE AND MORE WITH OTHER EHACs TO REDUCE STIGMA. YEAH, I THINK THAT IS RIGHT. I WANT AS A SOCIETY TO START TALKING MUCH MORE ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL ILLNESS NOW. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO RECOGNIZE THAT THIS DISCRIMINATION FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS STILL EXISTS. WE HAVE NOT ELIMINATED STIGMA EVEN THOUGH WE TALK MORE OF IT ESPECIALLY IN CERTAIN RACES AND CULTURES. IT IS STILL INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH WITHIN FAMILIES AND WORKPLACES. AND SO WE MUST STILL CONTINUE TO RAISE THE CONVERSATION AROUND MENTAL HEALTH AT EVERY CORNER AND REALIZE THAT THERE IS NOT JUST THIS BARRIER TO ACCESS BUT THERE ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE INCREDIBLY AFRAID TO ASK THE ‘ACCESS FOR THEIR MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS THEIR REPERCUSSIONS AND THE WORKPLACE OR BEING CRITICIZED BY EIR NUMBERS AND RELATIVES AND SO YOU KNOW WE NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB OF TALKING ABOUT TREATMENT IN AN ADVERTISEMENT WAY THAT WE WILL TALK ABOUT GOING AND GETTING A MARY CARE EXAM DO WELL ONE OF THE WAYS YOU I TRY TO DO THIS, YOU HAVE A PROGRAM GOING ON RIGHT NOW WITH FAITH LEADERS IN THE COMMUNITY. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT IT? ABSOLUTELY. IT’S SEVEN YEARS AGO. WE STARTED OUR MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION FOR FAITH LEADERS CONFERENCE RECOGNIZING THAT OUR HOUSEHOLD LEADERS IN THE COMMUNITY ARE OFTEN THE LEADERS TO HEAR ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES WITHIN THEIR CONGREGATIONS, BUT THEY MAY NOT HAVE THE TOOLS TO RESPOND APPROPRIATELY TO THESE CONCERNS . AND SO WE WANTED TO MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE AND AND WE STARTED THIS CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES AND WE ARE NOW HOSTING IT AS A SERIES OF WEBINARS AND AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMICUT BIL HAS MADE THE PROGRAM MORE ACCESSIBLE WL, EL AND SO EVERY THURSDAY DURING THE WHOLE MONTH OF MAY. WE WILL HAVE A ONE HOUR SESSION AT 1AM ONLINE AND DIFFERENT TOPICS LAST WEEK WERE ON YOUTH AND THEY ARE RECORDED FOR YOU TO ACCESS THE RECORDINGS. WE HAVE ONE COMING ON SUICIDE PREVENTION AND RECOVERY DAN SO ALL DIFFERENT TOPICS ALL LEADING BY DIFFERENT FAITH LEADERS FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS. AND SO WILL BE ABLE TO SHARE OF THEIR EXPERIENCE WHICH HAS HELPED SERVE THEIR CONGREGATIONS ALONGSIDE EXPERTS TO HELP WITH THEIR EXPERIENCE TOO. CAN YOU TELL PEOPLE WHERE THEY CAN GO AHEAD AND SEE THESE VIDEOS? ABSOLUTELY. SO IF YOU GO TO OUR WEBSITE NAMIBALTIMORE.ORG SLASH FACE YOU WILL ACCESS THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE WEBSITE IF YOU REGISTER FOR THE SERIES THEN YOU WILL RECEIVE THE RECORDINGS TOO. SO IF YOU MISS ONE YOU CAN SUBSCRIBE FOR THE WHOLE SERIES IF YOU MISS ONE RECORDING THAT IS A LIVE SESSION THEN WE WILL SEND YOU THE RECORDING AND AND I KNOW IT’S HARD TO TALK ABOUT IT THIS MOTHER’S DAY IS TODAY AND IT CAN BE VERY VERY CHALLENGING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST SHOOTING MOMS. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR? PEOPLE ON HOW TO GET THROUGH THIS DAY. I IMAGINE SOCIAL MEDIA IS REALLY HARD TO USE RIGHT NOW. YES. ABSOLUTELY. I WANT, I THINK FOR ALL OF US AS A WHOLE IT IS WISE TO LIMIT, YOU KNOW THE AMOUNT OF SOCIAL MEDIA WE CONSUME EVERY DAY. BUT YOU HAVE JUST A DAY LIKE TODAY, IT CAN BE INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST A LOVED ON OR FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST A CHILD. AND SO WE YOU KNOW I DO TNKHI THAT LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA TO PROTECT YOU A LITTLE AND THEN ALSO RECOGNIZE WHEN IT’S MORE THAN A DAY YOU KNOW I REALLY WANT WHAT WE TALK ABOUT IT NAMI IS THERE ARE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS. AND WHEN IS IT BEYOND A NORMAL DAY OF GRIEF OR SOMETHING? WHEN DO YOU NEED TO RESEARCH MORE? UM, AND SO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE A LOVE OR LISTEN TO THIS AND AND YOU HAVE A LOVE IN YOUR LIFE WHO HAS LOST THEIR MOTHER OR LOST A CHILD RECOGNIZING SOME OF THESE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS. IS THISOM SETHI MNGORE THAT RIGHT, YOU KNOW SORROW ONE DAY. CAN YOU HELP ENCOURAGE YOUR LOVED ONES TO MORE TREATMENT AND, YOU KNOW, GET THE HELP THEY NEED. Alright, CARRIE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING FOR SOME REALLY NECESSARY INFORMATION. I REALLY APPRECIATE. ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH ONCE AGAIN.
