“The series is basically the third film. That’s how creative it was… It’s heartbreaking.
Kim Cattrall finally spoke about And just like that. And, while she hasn’t watched it, she has plenty of thoughts on where the show may have gone wrong.
Adorning the cover of Varietyin this week’s Power of Women issue, the actor opened up about the sex and the city revived for the very first time since airing on HBO Max late last year through February.
If you recall, you might recall that the long-awaited sequel series was somewhat overshadowed by the absence of one of the show’s most beloved characters: Samantha Jones, whom Kim played throughout. of the six seasons of the original series and in two subsequent films.
Although disappointing, Samantha’s absence from the revival came as no surprise to fans of the series, who closely followed the messy feud between Kim and her partners for years now.
And before we get into his new comments, here’s a quick timeline of how we got to this point.
Since SATC First aired in 1998, there have always been rumors about the real-life relationships between the show’s central quartet: Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbs), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York Goldenblatt), and of course, Kim.
The alleged off-screen tensions between the costars — namely, Kim and SJP — had long been believed to center on money, with Sarah Jessica being paid significantly more than the other women, prompting Kim to negotiate a higher salary.
Despite this, their quiet discord apparently ended up becoming personal – and much more public – several years later in 2017, following claims that Kim was the reason a third SATC the movie had been scrapped at the last minute with script and production ready.
However, shortly after this information was published, Kim criticized the claims, instead informing fans about Twitter that she never wanted to reprise her role as Samantha in a third film.
Shortly after, Kim opened up about her feelings in a candid interview with Piers Morganin which she detailed her “authorized” decision to leave SATC in the old days.
“This is a clear decision, a strong decision in my life, to end one chapter and start another. I’m 61. It’s now,” she told Piers , before specifying once and for all that she and she SATC the teammates were “never friends”.
Sarah Jessica responded to Kim’s statements a year later in 2018, revealing that she had been “sorryby his co-star’s claims of a “toxic” on-set relationship. But unfortunately for her, things would end up getting much more complicated a few days later.
The quarrel has reached its Climax in February 2018 when – after her brother was tragically found dead – Kim lambasted her former co-star for expressing sympathy during a TV interview and, in a scathing Instagram postaccused SJ of “exploiting [the] tragedy in order to restore [her] nice girl character.
With all that in mind, it wasn’t really surprising to learn that Kim wouldn’t be joining the other women in the revival, which was announcement in January 2021.
Plus, it now looks like Kim didn’t even have a choice in the matter, revealing in her brand new interview with Variety that she was never even asked if she wanted to participate in And just like that.
“I was never asked to be part of the reboot,” Kim said, broaching the subject for the very first time. “I made my feelings clear after the possible third film, so I found out about it like everyone else did – on social media.”
Until now, this had not been widely confirmed by the show’s executives, many of whom had expressed that Kim would be well received to the franchise if she ever wanted to return. However, SATC creator Michael Patrick King admitted he had ruled out the possibility of a comeback.
“You have to look at the reality of something: you literally can’t get an actress to play a role,” Michael said in an in-depth interview with Variety ahead of the show’s season finale in February.
When asked if he had left the door open for Kim, he replied “no”, saying in a matter-of-fact tone: “There was no thought that Kim would ever participate in And just like thatbecause she said what she said.
“I have no realistic expectation of Kim Cattrall reappearing,” he added.
If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know that even without Kim’s participation, the essence of Samantha Jones certainly made itself felt. All along And just like thatThe 10-episode series of Samantha – whose absence was due to a move to London after a falling out with Carrie – was brought back to life with the help of text messages and messages sent to her former best friends.
Addressing Samantha’s shrewd revival, which the writers say was done as a way to “respect the heritageof the character, Kim — who, unsurprisingly, hasn’t seen the show — didn’t quite agree with the writers’ ideas. Namely, Samantha’s messy fallout with Carrie.
“It feels different from the Samantha I played,” she said of the on-screen feud, before going on to say she found it “odd” that the writers chose to continue her character, presumably in favor of killing her.
And in reality, just like on screen, the decade-long rift between Kim and SJ continues to quietly seethe in the background of the show’s legacy.
Sarah Jessica – who during their relationship has been less vocal about the dispute than her co-star – made a rare statement about her dynamic with Kim earlier this year, recounting Variety that she wouldn’t be on board if Kim were ever to reprise her role.
“I don’t think I would,” she said when asked if she would be okay with Kim signing on for And just like that. “I think there are too many public stories of feelings from her that she shares.”
Asked this week about SJ’s comments, Kim simply said she hadn’t read the reports, adding that her co-star needn’t worry as her return ‘would never happen anyway’ .
“The series is basically the third film. That’s how creative it was,” she said, confirming an alleged script from the scrapped film where Samantha would receive unsolicited nudes from Miranda’s 14-year-old son Brady. Kim called the idea “heartbreaking.”
Despite feeling she was ready to leave Samantha in the past when the prospect of the third film was offered to her, Kim said she would have been more inclined to sign on had she felt inspired by Samantha’s future. .
“Why can’t Samantha, who owns her public relations company, sell it? Maybe she had to sell it because of financial problems?” she suggested when asked about her hopes for the character. “She had to sell it to a guy who wears a hoodie, and that’s the dilemma she has.”
“I wish we all had some kind of event to warrant a third movie. That didn’t happen. But also, I was ready,” she continued before developing the courage that it took to get away from such a beloved franchise.
“As difficult as it has been and as scary as it can be to stand up and not be intimidated by the press or the fans or whoever – to just say, I’m fine. I am on this track. It was so great working with you. I liked it so much, but here I am,” she concluded, making it clear once and for all that any hope of Samantha appearing in And just like that season 2 can be well and truly ruled out.
