WILL IT BE LOPEZ AGAINST INEOS AND BAHRAIN? THE DEPARTURES

In today’s cycling it is not so easy to find a race in which there is no real hierarchy of favorites. To the Tour of the Alps 2022, however, it will be so, because sifting through the list of subscribers it is really difficult to choose one as a favorite rather than another. True, there is not one of those phenomena that is monopolizing modern cycling, but there are many champions who want to add to their palmares a short prestigious stage races such as the one that winds through Trentino, Alto Adige and Tirolo. .

The teams best equipped for TotA’s tricky course appear to be the Ineos Grenadiers, with two former race winners as Richie Porte (2015) and Pavel Sivakov (2019), and the Bahrain Victorious of the Basques Mikel Landaalso already winner of the race in 2016, and Pello Bilbao, second last year and returning from a very convincing start to the season, with even a stage victory at Itzulia less than two weeks ago. Ineos will also be able to leverage on Eddie Dunbarwinner of the Coppi & Bartali Week, while the Arab training on the young emerging Colombian Santiago Buitrago.

When the road climbs, one of the runners who will need to be kept closer is Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan), one of the most indecipherable athletes of the group, able to win against anyone and in the same way to be wrecked very easily. An important goal for him will be to keep himself out of trouble and gain confidence ahead of the Corsa Rosa. To watch his back there will be a runner who also knows how to be a captain, David De La Cruz (Astana Qazaqstan), which would not be surprising if he wanted to try himself to remain at the top of the rankings. The two old transalpine rivals will also meet on the roads of the TotA Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) e Romain Bardet (Team DSM), both overshadowed by the advent of the new generation but always ready to ignite the race if they get the chance. EF Education-EasyPost, on the other hand, will rely on the odd couple Hugh Carthy-Esteban Chaves, 193 cm tall the Englishman and 164 cm the Colombian, but both with a great passion for climbing. Carthy last year finished 5th in the TotA and 8th in the Giro: this year he will try to improve in both outings.

Bora-hansgrohe will also show up with a pretty solid line-up, with Lennard Kämna And Matteo Fabbro particularly suitable for Euroregional routes and eager to give some good signals in view of the Giro. The Friulian rider, in particular, has just returned from a not very happy start to the season, but the TotA can represent the ideal scenario to reverse the trend.

Attention then to Torstein Traæn of the always surprising Uno-X, a Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën), Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ) e Carl Frederik Hagen (Israel-PremierTech), without forgetting that there is at the start Chris Froomewhich we all dream can suddenly return to what it once was.

And the Italians? Apart from the aforementioned Blacksmith, it will be difficult to emerge in the general classification. In recent years only Vincenzo Nibali and Domenico Pozzovivo have managed to get on the podium and the victory has been missing since 2013, at the time it was still the Giro del Trentino, with the Shark. We have to be honest, also this year it seems very difficult to be able to hope to see a blue not only on the podium, but also in the Top 10. Some young players, however, will try to show themselves off, Filippo Zana (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) and the host Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain-Victorious) above all, but maybe even some more experienced runners like Alessandro De Marchi (Israel-PremierTech).

Speaking of young people, at the start from Cles there will be many on the launch pad, such as Clément Champoussin (AG2R Citroën), Einer Rubio (Movistar), Thymen Arensman (Team DSM), Natnael Tesfatsion (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli), surprising fourth final last year and returning from the podium at the Giro di Sicilia, Igor Arrieta (Equipo Kern Pharma) is the rising star of Belgian cycling Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora-hansgrohe).
