Xiaomi 12 vs Google Pixel 6, clash between “small” large smartphones

The Google Pixel 6 and it Xiaomi 12 they are both two essential flagships: in the sense that they are both excellent smartphones, with rather solid specifications, but both manufacturers offer a Pro version of the two smartphones with an even more robust technical data sheet.

Xiaomi 12 vs Pixel 6

They are both located within the Android ecosystem and are aimed at a rather similar audience, at least as regards the economic availability. Nonetheless, the differences are there and in some cases, for performance and specifications, we can safely speak of a small abyss of differences.

Xiaomi 12 vs Pixel 6: which of the two should you buy? Without further ado, let’s find out right away.

Size, design and build quality

It is useless to go around it, Xiaomi has done a superb job on the design and handling front of its Xiaomi 12. Not surprisingly it is one of the elements that we most appreciated in the our review of the essential flagship. The new Xiaomi 12 is elegant and pleasant visually: it is not bulky like most other smartphones on the market. Let’s start right from here: the Xiaomi 12 is practically the only flagship with one 6.28 “diagonal. The Google Pixel 6 offers dimensions more in line with the market standard, with a diagonal of 6.4 inches.

The overall feeling is also very different. Elegance, European taste and premium materials on the one hand, more cheeky and playful design on the other. The Xiaomi 12 has a body made of curved glass with satin finish, while the frames are made of aluminum. On the Pixel 6 we find a metal body, with frames in recycled aluminum, and therefore a rear glass body.

Xiaomi 12

With its latest generation, Google has completely revolutionized the lines of its smartphones. The Pixel 6 is clearly one of the most recognizable design smartphones on the market. It does not go unnoticed and does not get confused with the devices of the competition: thanks to room-bar horizontal development, in black glass and raised by 3mm compared to the body. Either you love it or you hate it, here of course we leave the final judgment to you. In this respect, the Pixel 6 and the Xiaomi 12 couldn’t be more different!

Display

The display of the Xiaomi 12 has been awarded by critics and is presented as a definitely solid solution, so much so that DisplayMate assigns it an A + certification. As anticipated a few lines above, honorable mention for the 6.28 inches, a not bulky diagonal that distinguishes the Chinese flagship from a large part of the current Android offer, especially when looking at this specific segment of the market.

It’s a AMOLED with FullHD + resolution And 120Hz refresh rate. We then find a maximum brightness of 1100 nit. We therefore find support for the HDR10 + and Dolby Vision standard, in addition to the Gorilla Glass Victus protection. In short, a complete product that leaves no room for disappointments and regrets, especially in the use of films and multimedia contents.

Xiaomi 12

The Google Pixel 6 has a slightly more generous diagonal: 6.4 inches. We always find the FullHD + resolution, but in this case the refresh rate unfortunately stops at 90Hz and even the maximum brightness is not up to what is seen on the Xiaomi 12. On the other hand, also on the Pixel 6 we find the Gorilla Glass Victus, both on the display and on the rear body, which gives it an important impact resistance. In general, those looking for a more complete display and do not intend to make compromises will probably have to orient themselves on the Xiaomi 12.

Google - Pixel 6

A lot of cutting-edge technology under the hood

With its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google introduced its proprietary chip for the first time Google Tensor. The new Xiaomi 12 can instead count on Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the spearhead of Qualcomm’s processor offering. Translated: Octa-core Cortex A-510 CPU and Adreno 730 GPU.

In terms of pure performance, especially on the gaming side, the Snapdragon chip proves to be more powerful than the Google alternative. On the other hand, the Pixel 6 has more than one important strength: its chip Titan M2designed to ensure maximum security and protect user data, for example by supporting Android Strongbox to randomly generate and protect passwords, and a custom ISP to improve AI and machine learning tasks.

The Xiaomi 12 has 8 + 128GB, 8 + 256GB and 12 + 256GB memory cuts, while the Google Pixel 6 in Italy is available exclusively in the 8 + 128GB size.

Drums

The Xiaomi 12 is equipped with a 4500mAh battery, in line with the compact size of the smartphone, which imposes some sacrifices. On the other hand, we find the best of Xiaomi’s charging technology, one of the brands that has stood out the most on this front. Thus we find the support for fast charging from 67W, with a charge from 0 to 100% in 39 minutes, and there is also the 50W wireless fast charging.

On the Pixel 6 we find a 4614mAh battery, and therefore a bit more capacious, but on the other hand we lose more than something on the charging speed: fast wired 3oW and wireless 21W respectively. Charging times are among the slowest of the current Android offer: 30 minutes to reach 50% autonomy and an hour to reach 80%, provided you use Google’s 30W USB Type-C adapter.

Cameras

Also on the side of the photographic sector there are very important differences. To begin with, on the Xiaomi 12 we find three rear cameras: main sensor Sony IMX677 50MP, 13MP ultrawide camera with 123-degree field of view and 5MP telemacro with autofocus. On the Pixel 6, unlike its older brother, the Pixel 6 Pro, we find only two rear cameras: the main 50MP, (a Samsung GN1) and 12MP ultrawide camera.

Looking at the selfie cam, the front camera, the comparison is even more uneven: 32MP camera on the Xiaomi 12 and 8MP on the Google Pixel 6.

But it would be unfair to stop at a superficial reading of the data sheet. The Pixel 6 can count on extremely solid software optimization, among the best in the Android market. Not only does AI assist you in making flawless shots, but there is also a rich package of additional and exclusive features. like Magic Eraserwhich allows you to completely remove objects and people from your photos – without the slightest effort and without the need for photo editing skills.

Operating system and updates

On the interface side we find very important differences. Clearly Google is banking on an authentic Android experience, with an emphasis on strong integration with its services and a number of exclusive features or ahead of the rest of the Android offering. Just think of the very rich content of the Feature Drop periodicals specifically designed for Pixel smartphones.

On the contrary, the new Xiaomi 12 use a proprietary interface, MIUI 13which offers a highly personalized experience, with a language that, to a certain extent, follows the design and functionality of iOS a little (just think of the new Control Center).

Xiaomi guarantees three years of support for updates and four years for security patches. Google does even more, with the promise to continuously support the Pixel 6 for a period of at least five years (on this front it is one of the most generous producers ever … the advantage of playing at home). Both smartphones are available from launch with the new Android 12.
